Celta Vigo are the only one
of the four Spanish sides to be knocked out of the competition at the last 16
stage after losing 2-0 at Werder Bremen. Needing to overturn a 1-0 first leg
result, and with his side languishing near the foot of the table, Fernando
Vázquez rested some of his key players And put out an attacking 3-4-3
formation. And they were unlucky not to get the goal they wanted when Italian
referee Stefano Farina turned down a clear penalty by Naldo on Guayre, who had
to leave the field of play injured a few minutes later.
Just three minutes in to the
second half though Almeida headed the German side into the lead from Schulz's
cross, the referee waving away claims from the Spanish players that the striker
was offside. And Farina further upset the visitors when he ruled out a goal by
Jesús Perera in an identical position. Soon afterwards Fritz put the
game out of the Galicians' reach, winning the ball off Nené and running
on to strike an angled shot past Esteban, and although Perera and Canobbio both
tested Wiese late on, the tie was already over. |
