A surprise at the
Sánchez Pizjuán stadium, where Sevilla could only scrape a draw
with Shakhtar Donetsk, and that thanks to a very late penalty. The defending
champions started well, with Martí opening the scoring from the penalty
spot after Kerzhakov picked up a pass from Duda before being brought down by
Shust. Alfaro hit the post a few minutes later, but the Ukrainians forced a
couple of corners, and when the local defence could only clear the second up in
the air, Hübschman nipped in to turn the ball past Palop on the near post.
Alves hit the post for a
second time before the break, but Juande Ramos turned to the more experienced
Adriano and Luis Fabiano to try and force home the advantage. But the visitors
broke free again, and Alves brought down Bielik as he advanced on goal,
Matuzalem converting the resulting penalty. Shust was called upon soon
afterwards to keep out headers from Luis Fabiano and Antonio Puerta, and it
seemed that the Andalusians were heading for defeat before Gay fouled Maresca
in the area, and Maresca drilled home the third penalty of the night to at
least square the match. Sevilla now need a win or a high score draw in the
second leg if they are to stay in the competition. |
