Defending champions Sevilla
completed the formalities, beating Steaua Bucharest 1-0 to complete an
aggregate 3-0 scoreline over the whole tie. With a two goal lead from the first
leg, Juande Ramos rested several of his key players. But he was forced to
change his plans with only twenty minutes gone after Antonio Puerta picked up
an injury, and with Adriano already out after an injury in the first leg, youth
international Diego Capel was given a run out.
The Rumanians have a
reputation for bring a good away side though, and Palop had to be at his best
to keep out Nicolita and Christocea early on. However with the first half
coming to an end Kerzhakov got on the end of Hinkel's cross to head past
Cernea, and the tie was over. After that both sides decided to conserve their
forces for another day, and their were virtually no further chances until
Scottish referee Stuart Douglas blew the final whistle. Sevilla already know
that their next opponents will be Shakhtar Donetsk, but they have a couple of
big games to think about before then. |
