Defending champions Sevilla
virtually ensured their place in the last 16 after beating Steaua Bucharest 0-2
in the first leg tie. The Andalusians started strongly, with Alves, Alfaro and
Kerzhakov all going close. Petre had a goal disallowed for a previous foul
shortly before half time, and a minute later Sevilla were awarded a free kick
at the other end. Alves's kick was half blocked by the defensive wall, but the
ball fell to Poulsen who whipped it in to the net.
Palop had some work to do
either side of half time, but with a quarter of an hour to go Goian brought
down Kerzhakov inside the area, and substitute Kanouté converted the
spot kick for the second of the night. The Spaniards could have increased the
lead after that, in particular with a couple of efforts from Chevantón,
but they had already done enough to make next week's second leg a bit of a
formality. |
