Sevilla are through to the
knock out stage, although a 1-2 defeat against Alkmaar meant they only finished
second in their group. Both teams were already qualified, and both Juande Ramos
and Louis Van Gaal rested key players. But the Andalusians needed to win to
overtake the Dutch side and top their group, and only some good saves by
Waterreus kept the scores unchanged at the break.
Just seven minutes in to the
second half though Sevilla took the lead, Chevantón winning himself a
penalty which he tucked wide of the keeper. But ten minutes later Arveladze
equalised after picking up a long ball and running on to beat Cobeño.
Ramos threw on more
attacking players, but with the game coming to an end Arveladze charged down an
attempted clearance by David and ran on to clip an angled shot past the young
keeper. It didn't change the outcome, but it did signal Sevilla's first ever
loss in Europe in the Sánchez Pizjuan stadium after 29 matches without
defeat. |
