Celta finished second in
what was considered to be the most difficult group in the competition after
drawing 1-1 at Palermo. The Galicians needed a draw to qualify and knock their
opponents out of the competition, and they started well, Canobbio bringing a
good save out of Agliardi in the opening minutes. Nené hit the bar and
the keeper stopped another effort from Canobbio later in the first half, but
the Di Michele and Caracciolo also went close for the Italians at the other
end.
Twelve minutes in to the
second half Celta took the lead, Baiano getting on the end of Nené's
cross to head goalwards, the ball deflecting off Cassani and in to the net off
the crossbar. Local coach Guidolin made two attacking changes, and veteran
midfielder Tedesco levelled the scores, scrambling the ball past Esteban after
Placente could only turn a wide cross in to his path. After that though the
Spaniards ran down the clock, Vázquez making three late substitutions in
the dying minutes. Celta were in to the hat for the next round, and Palermo
will have to wait another year. |
