Espanyol finished with
maximum points in their group after beating Austria Vienna 1-0 on Wednesday
night. The Catalans were already qualified, and Valverde used the occasion to
give a run out to some of his lesser used players. Even so they were on top
throughout the first half, Ito shooting wide and Pandiani bringing a couple of
good saves out of Safar. The Austrians could have scored though had Mila and
Maier not wasted easy chances midway through the first half.
Valverde decided in the
second half to give a run out to two of his youngster, Angel and Julián,
and Riera and Ito both went close soon after the restart. And with ten minutes
gone Riera broke free down the left wing and crossed in for Pandiani to head
home his seventh goal of the competition on the far post. Angel, Pandiani and
Riera all had opportunities to increase the scoreline after that, but they had
already done enough to finish top of their group and avoid a difficult draw in
the knock out stage. |
