Espanyol's extraordinary
form in the UEFA Cup continued with a 0-2 win over former European champions
Ajax. The early chances were for the Dutch side, with Sneijder testing Iraizoz
with a free kick and their two Catalans Gabri and Roger also having efforts
blocked. But with ten minutes to go to the break, Pandiani got on the end of
Moha's centre to steer a powerful header down past Stekelenburg.
Iraizoz did well to keep out
Huntelaar, Sneijder and Vertonghen after the restart, but Corominas also went
close a couple of times. And with a quarter of an hour to go the young winger
got on the end of a cross by Pandiani to fire home his side's second. There was
still time for the home side to rattle the woodwork, but the game ended soon
afterwards and Espanyol had kept up their 100% record, virtually ensuring them
top spot in their group. |
