Defending champions Sevilla
beat Sporting Braga 2-0 to record their first victory in the group stage. After
drawing their first match Juande Ramos wasn't taking any chances, and he put
out a strong line up against the Portuguese side who are currently lying third
in their league.
Even so Cesinha had a goal
disallowed for offside and Palop had to save from Luis Felipe before the
Andalusians finally took control. Paulo Santos kept out an effort from Adriano
and Kanouté and Poulsen both went close, and with the first half coming
to a close Alves sent Adriano away for him to set up Luis Fabiano to score.
Sevilla went forward after
the restart looking to wrap things up, with Kanouté and Adriano trying
their luck. With the scoreline unchanged though Ramos finally turned to
Chevantón, who had hardly played this season due to a long injury. And
within a few minutes he had his name on the scoreboard, beating Santos at the
second attempt after the keeper failed to hold on to Renato's shot.
There was still time for
young substitute Alfaro to hit the post, but the game ended soon afterwards,
leaving the spaniards in second place. A win at Grasshoppers next week would
ensure their place in the next round. |
