Celta faltered in their first group match, drawing 1-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. Jesús Perera headed the Galicians into the lead in the ninth minute from Cobbio's centre, but Huber levelled the scores soon afterwards with an angled shot across Esteban after Kohler crossed in from the left wing.

Angel shot straight at Nikolov and Canobbio failed to beat the keeper later in the first half, and Kyrgiakos wasted an opportunity at the other end. The visitors were left with ten men on the hour mark when Meier picked up a second booking, but the Galicians couldn't take advantage, Perera shooting wide after Canobbio set him up again late on.
