After failing to get through
the first round last season, and being knocked out of the Champions League at
the initial stage this time around, Osasuna finally won through a tie in a
European competition. They only managed to do so though on the away goal rule
after drawing 0-0 at home with Trabzonspor, and there were some nervous moments
before the fans could celebrate at the final whistle.
The Spaniards started on
top, but the only thing they had to show for it were a couple of weak efforts
by Delporte and Raúl García. And they were let off the hook when
Martins headed a cross from Gokdeniz over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
Before the break though David López went close and Webó brought a
first save out of Jefferson.
The visiting keeper was
called upon a number of times after the restart, particularly to keep out
efforts from López García and Milosevic, and Webó missed
another easy chance. The Turkish side could have got the goal they were looking
for though to cancel out the 2-2 result from the first leg, with Martins (who
was lucky not to have been sent off minutes earlier) having a goal disallowed
for the positional offside of a colleague and Szymkowiak firing a late shot
over the bar. Relief all round in the end though, and Osasuna will be in
Tuesday's draw for the league stage. |
