Spain's under 21 side will not be taking part in either the European Championship finals or the Olympic games the following year after they were knocked out of the tournament at the play-off stage by Italy. The youngsters were hopeful after a scoreless draw in the away leg, but midway through the first half they were caught out when a speculative shot by Chiellini looped over the head of Moyà and in to the net. And ten minutes later a spectacular volley by Montolivo left them virtually out. Iñaki Saéz made two changes at the break, and one of his substitute's Soldado headed a goal back from Gavilán's cross on the hour mark. But they were unable to make any headway after that, and when Javier Flaño was sent off after an injury time rumpus it was all over.
