Spain will play Austria in
the semi-finals next Wednesday after a 1-1 draw with Portugal confirmed their
top spot in group B. With nothing to play for, Ginés Meléndez
gave a run out to his lesser used players, and for most of the first half they
were up against it as their opponents pushed for the win they needed to finish
in second place. Midway through the first half, Atlético keeper
Bernabé gave away a penalty on Barbosa, and Bruno Gama stepped up to
score from the spot. And Barbosa went close before Tavares had a goal ruled out
for offside close to the break.
Spain had only really tested
Igor Araújo once in the first half, the keeper stopping an effort from
César Díaz, but the Albacete striker left him with no chance when
he got on the end of Toni's cross to head into the net just two minutes after
the restart. News came in that Scotland were beating Turkey in the other group
match, and Barbosa and Gama both brought good saves out of Bernabé as
Portugal desperately pushed for the winner. But Meléndez brought on
fresh legs and the intense heat finally brought the game to an end, leaving
another strong rival out of the competition. The two may meet again in the
youth World Cup in Canada next year though, as Portugal at least ensured third
place in the group. |
