UEFA Cup Final
Espanyol 2 - Sevilla 2 (1-3 penalty shoot out)
Sevilla won the UEFA
Cup for the second year running after beating fellow Spaniards Espanyol
in the penalty shoot out. The Andalusians took the lead early on when Adriano
picked up a long throw from Palop on the halfway line and ran on past his
marker to beat Gorka from a wide angle. But Riera equalised a few minutes later
after another long run out of midfield, the winger's shot taking a deflection
off Daniel Alves to fly past Palop. The keeper tipped another effort from Riera
on to the crossbar after the restart, but a few minutes later Espanyol were
left with ten men after Moisés Hurtado was shown a second yellow card.
The game went in to extra
time, and Juande Ramos's side appeared to have won it when Kanouté
turned a cross from Jesús Navas inside the near post. But with just five
minutes to go Jonatas picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area to level
the scores once again. It was down to penalties, but although Alves fired one
over the bar, Palop saved from Luis García, Jonatas and Torrejón
to add another trophy to Sevilla's ever growing cabinet. It was a bitter blow
for Espanyol, who were beaten in the final for the second time in their
history. (16.05.07) |
