Under 17 European championship
Spain are European
under 17 champions after beating England 1-0 in the final in Belgium.
Both sides had chances before the break, but Juan Santiesteban's side got what
was to prove the only goal of the game eight minutes after the restart,
Barcelona's Bojan Krkic driving a low shot back into the net after Fran
Mérdia's effort was blocked. This was Spain's first victory since the
category was introduced in the 2001/2 season, although they won the under 16
equivalent six times previously. (13.05.07)
Spain reached the
final once again after an epic semi-final against Belgium. Juan
Santiesteban's team appeared to be in trouble after Pichu was sent off early in
the second half, and then Hazard put the hosts ahead on the hour mark. But
Bojan Krkic equalised with eight minutes to go, and the game went to penalties
where the youngsters won the shoot out 7-6. Spain's opponents on Sunday will be
England. (10.05.07)
Spain went through to
the semi-finals as group champions after holding Germany to a 0-0 draw.
Having won their first two games, one point was enough to ensure top spot, but
they could have won it had Bojan Krkic converted a chance in the final minutes.
Spain play hosts Belgium in the semi-final on Thursday. (07.05.07)
