UEFA Cup, league stage, day 1

A reasonably good start for the three Spanish sides who started the league stage tonight. Espanyol won 0-2 at Sparta Prague, a Luis García penalty and a Riera strike in the second half giving them the three points. And there were goal-less draws for the other two sides, defending Champions Sevilla drawing 0-0 at Slovan Liberec and Osasuna being held to the same score by Heerenveen in Pamplona. Celta had a rest day in group H, where Newcastle and Palermo both won their opening games. (19.10.06)
