Sevilla rounded off their
best ever season, beating cup final debutants Getafe 1-0 in the Santiago
Bernabeu stadium to add the Copa del Rey to the European Supercup and UEFA cup
titles. It was the fourth time they had won the Spanish cup, although the last
time was back in 1948.
It was a hard fought and at
times bad tempered match though, with heavy tackles in particular from the
Getafe players, who had learnt the lesson against Barcelona in their
semi-final. The Madrid based team could have taken the lead early on,
Güiza failing to beat Palop in the sixth minute when he broke free but
could not round the keeper. Just four minutes later though Kanouté won
the ball off Pulido and ran on to fire a shot low past Luis García to
open the scoring.
The Getafe keeper did well
to keep out Renato midway through the first half, and Luis Fabiano headed
another chance wide soon afterwards. But Bernd Schuster's side thought they
should have had a couple of penalties, in particular one by Renato on Manu
close to half time which set off a heated argument between the players at the
break.
Luis García had a
couple of saves to make after the restart, in particular from Kanouté
and Jesús Navas, and Duda drove a late shot just wide of the upright,
but the last few minutes were played out in the Andalusians' half as Getafe
fought bravely for the equaliser. Manu fired a shot way over the bar when
through though and Güiza was way off target with another effort, and even
though Kanouté was sent off for retaliating near the end they never
really troubled Palop.
When the final whistle went
the Getafe players surrounded referee Rodríguez Santiago, and Celestini
was shown a red card for protesting. Eventually though they had to collect
their losers medals, which comes with a consolation prize of a first ever place
in the UEFA cup for next season. Sevilla though keep going, the only club in
Europe to win three titles this season, and who is to say what they can achieve
in the Champions League next year. The sky's the limit! |
