Quarter
final, second leg
Disgraceful scenes in the
cup tie between city rivals Betis and Sevilla, the match being
abandoned when visiting manager Juande Ramos was stretchered off unconscious
after being hit by a bottle thrown from the crowd. The incident happened midway
through the second half, moments after Kanouté had given Sevilla a 0-1
lead, and the Spanish football federation must now decide whether to award the
game to the visitors or play out the remaining minutes. Both sides had hit the
woodwork before that, Jesús Navas rattling the crossbar with a long shot
and Nano also hitting the bar later in the first half. Caffa shot wide and
Juanito deflected a dangerous shot from Navas for a corner before the break,
and Alves tested Contreras with a free kick before Kanouté picked up a
pass from Renato to score. After that all hell broke loose.
Barcelona came back
from their 0-1 first leg defeat to beat Zaragoza 1-2 and qualify for the
semi-finals on the away goal rule. Although Frank Rijkaard left Eto'o at home,
he put out an aggressive 3-4-3 line up, and his side levelled the tie when Xavi
picked up a return pass from Márquez to open the scoring on the quarter
hour mark. And Iniesta made it two soon afterwards, turning the rebound back in
to the net after Messi was closed down by César. The locals were left
with ten men midway through the second half when D'Alessandro was sent off for
a head but on Messi, but Piqué turned in Aimar's free kick soon
afterwards to set up a nail biting finish. Diogo headed over and Ewerthon fired
a long shot just past Jorquera's far post, but Barça could have
increased their lead when Messi chipped a shot against the upright in injury
time
Logic prevailed in the other
two games, with Getafe and Deportivo both doing enough to consolidate their
three goal leads from the first leg. Getafe lost 1-0 on the night to an
Osasuna side which was packed with reserve players and youngsters, coach
Ziganda preferring to save his top names for the league and UEFA cup matches.
Even so Juanlu brought a good save out of Luis García before debutant
Azpilicueta headed back Monreal's cross, allowing Romeo to head past the keeper
on the quarter hour mark. There were few chances after that though, the only
ones of note when Vivar Dorado caused some problems for Elía close to
half time, and when Webó went close in the dying minutes. Getafe were
through to the semi-finals for the first time in their history, although the
bad news was an injury to Alexis, who was carried off on a stretcher
semi-conscious after clashing with his own defender Tena.
Deportivo went
through after drawing 1-1 at Valladolid, the second division leaders
unable to overturn the 4-1 scoreline from the first match despite playing
against ten men for all of the second half. Adrián went close for the
visitors with only ten seconds on the clock, but after that the locals were on
top until Felipe put the Galicians ahead, shooting under Jacobo after a long
throw was knocked on. Just a couple of minutes later though the home side came
close to equalising when Munúa pushed a Chema header on to the post, and
Coloccini got himself sent off just before the break with a straight red card.
But Caparrós pulled his men back, and it was not until five minutes from
the end that Manchev beat Munúa with a low shot to level the scores. Two
minutes later numbers were evened up when substitute Víctor picked up a
second booking, and it was all over. (28.02.07)
The disciplinary committee
decided that the remaining half hour or so of the tie between Betis and
Sevilla must be played out behind closed doors in a neutral ground
(Getafe) on 20th March. .Betis's ground has been closed for 3 games (subject to
appeal) and the actions of the two club presidents is being investigated to see
whether their hostile actions in the build up to the game provoked the
aforementioned scenes. (03.03.07)
Sevilla qualified
without too many problems for the semi-finals of the cup after the last 35
minutes of their postponed tie with city rivals Betis were played out
without further goals. A Kanouté strike had given the visitors a 0-1
lead shortly before the match was abandoned three weeks ago, and the goalless
draw from the first leg meant that Betis had to score twice to go through. In
the end though keeper Contreras was their best man, making top class saves from
Alfaro, Antonio Puerta and Daniel Alves, and Cobeño, replacing the
injured Palop, hardly had any work to do in the opposite goal. Juande Ramos's
side will go into Thursday's draw together with Barcelona, Deportivo and
Getafe. (20.03.07) |
