Quarter
final, first leg
Zaragoza have been
making a bit of a habit of knocking Barcelona out of the cup in recent
years, and they appear to be on the way to doing it once again after a 0-1 win
in the Nou Camp. Frank Rijkaard's side couldn't get out of first gear, and
César was only troubled by a long shot from Deco and an effort from
Iniesta which Gabi Milito cleared from in front of goal. The best chances of
the first half though fell to the visitors, Oscar forcing a point blank save
out of Jorquera and Sergio García firing a shot against the upright.
Saviola had a couple of chances after the restart, but Diogo (returning from a
five match ban) got what was to prove the only goal of the game when he headed
D'Alessandro's corner past the keeper with a quarter of an hour to go.
Deportivo are close
to another semi-final appearance after coming from a goal down to beat second
division Valladolid 4-1. New signing Manchev put the visitors ahead
midway through the first half after picking up a cross from Sisi to beat
Munúa, and Riki wasted a couple of chances to level the scores before
half time. But Pablo Alvarez (finally getting a game after a long injury)
forced home the equaliser after the restart, and another debutant, young
substitute Rubén Rivera, headed the Galicians in front from
Verdú's cross a few minutes later. There were a few nervous moments for
the home fans though before Verdú took advantage of slack marking to
make it three, and then set up Juanma to head a fourth in the last five
minutes. Lopo was shown a red card in the last minute of injury time, but by
then it was too late for the visitors to save their 21 match unbeaten record.
Getafe are the team
on form at the moment though, and they beat Osasuna for the second time
in four days, this time by 3-0, to put a foot and a half in the semi-finals for
the first time in their history. Güiza started things off in the tenth
minute, heading in from close up after Alexis headed on Mario Cotelo's corner.
Luis García did well to keep out Webó at the other end soon
afterwards, but Alexis got on the end of another Cotelo corner to head a second
shortly before the interval. With just over an hour gone Verpakovskis was
gifted his first goal for his new club after Ricardo dropped a Paredes cross at
his feet, and Osasuna's night was summed up when Raúl García hit
the crossbar later on. (31.01.07)
City rivals Sevilla
and Betis played out a gritty 0-0 draw in their first leg tie, a result
which favours Luis Fernández's side. Whereas the home side put out their
strongest line up, Fernández used the occasion to give a run out to some
of his lesser used players, including two of his new signings Caffa and Ilic.
Even so they held their own, and it was only in the last few minutes that they
were put under real pressure by their hosts. However nobody could get on the
end of a dangerous cross by substitute Alfaro, and when Kanouté failed
to beat Contreras from Martí's free kick it was all over. (01.02.07)
