Villarreal could only draw
1-1 in their second leg match against Maribor, a result which leaves them
without European football this season. The Spaniards needed to overturn a 1-2
defeat from the first leg, but their opponents were more match fit and could
have opened the scoring when Jelic forced Viera into a first class save late in
the first half. Pires allowed himself to be closed down after rounding the
keeper soon afterwards, and the visitors hit the bar with a deflected free kick
soon after the restart. But Jelic should have scored a few minutes later and
Villarreal found themselves with ten men when Tacchinardi was shown a second
yellow card by over-zealous Swiss referee Carlos Bertolini ten minutes from the
end.
Nihat did give Pellegrini's
side hope when he drilled a long shot past Ranilovic with five minutes to go,
but Gonzalo got himself sent off with a straight red, and a minute later Zajc
ran on to beat Viera after a long clearance by the keeper was headed on. The
game ended in uproar after Forlán became the third Villarreal player to
be sent off in a bust up between the two sets of players, and the referee
accidentally landed an uppercut on the chin of the goalscorer as he whipped the
red card in to the air. A sad night all round, and Villarreal will now have to
revise their pre-season plans. |
