It's a thin line between success and failure! Real Madrid were knocked out of the competition by Bayern Munich, the third match this week involving Spanish sides to be decided on the away goal rule, leaving Valencia as La Liga's only representative in the quarter finals. Capello opted for a defensive line up to try and defend the first leg 3-2 lead, and although he had to alter his plans for a five man defence when Cannavaro pulled out with an injury, he did line up with three defensive midfield players. But his plan only lasted ten seconds before Salihamdzic won the ball off a sleepy Roberto Carlos straight from Madrid's kick off and crossed in for Makaay to beat Casillas.

After that Casillas was called on to make three vital saves, the first two from Podolski and Makaay on breakaways, and the third with a header from Van Buyten. Capello took off Emerson with just over half an hour gone to bring on Guti, and Raúl came close to equalising with a shot which brushed the outside of the post just before the break. But in the first minute after the restart the Spaniards were almost caught out again when Casillas managed to turn a shot from Van Bommel away from goal.

Up to that point Kahn had hardly had any work to do all night, but he was called into action to push out a Van Nistelrooy header from Raúl's cross.A few minutes later though Madrid gave away a silly corner, and Lucio got on the end of Sagnol's kick to steer a header between Casillas and Ramos.

With seven minutes to go the visitors were awarded a hotly disputed penalty when Robinho fell over Lucio in the area. Nerves were starting to get frayed, and Van Bommel and Diarra were both sent off after picking up second yellow cards in a niggly incident. Van Nistelrooy kept his cool though and slotted home the kick, and Sergio Ramos thought he had equalised with a shot from the edge of the area in injury time only to see the strike ruled out as he had controlled the ball with his arm. A close thing, but Madrid join Barcelona on the sidelines this year, and both have to pick themselves up for this weekend's derby game.
