Defending champions Barcelona are out of the competition after losing on the away goal rule to Liverpool. Needing two goals to have a chance of going through, Rijkaard repeated the attacking 3-4-3 line up which he used to good effect in the cup at Zaragoza. And he could also count for the first time in several months with his first choice "REM" line up, Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Messi. But his side were over-run in the first half, with Riise firing a shot across goal and then hitting the crossbar in the first ten minutes. Valdés made an excellent double save from Bellamy and Kuyt, and Puyol headed clear from Riise in the same play, and Sissoko also rattled the bar with a first time shot from 35 yards after a poor clearance from the Barcelona keeper.

Puyol made an important clearance from Bellamy as the second half started along the same lines as the first, but Barça finally started to show some signs of life. Ronaldinho could only fire a free kick straight at Reina, but a few minutes later he wriggled free of three defenders and struck a shot against the post. Rijkaard replaced an off-form Eto'o with Giuly and then went for broke, replacing Thuram with Gudjohnsen. Within four minutes the Icelandic striker made his mark, picking up a pass from Xavi and rounding Reina to score. The visiting fans dared to hope, but after that the visitors hardly troubled the keeper, and only a couple of saves by Valdés from Gerrard and Pennant prevented Liverpool from levelling the scores.
