Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich 3-2 in the first leg of their Champions League tie, a result which leaves things well balanced for the return match in a fortnight's time. Raúl produced a captain's performance, picking up a pass from Van Nistelrooy in the ninth minute to run on and force a shot past Kahn after the keeper blocked his first effort. Lucio headed an equaliser a few minutes later, losing his marker Cannavaro to head long free kick from ex Barcelona midfielder Van Bommel past Casillas, but Raúl restored the lead soon afterwards, heading in near to goal after Iván Helguera headed back Beckham's corner.

Capello's side seemed to be on the way to a comfortable win when Van Nistelrooy made it three following a Beckham free kick with just over half an hour gone, the first time they have scored that many at home in three months. But after Kahn tipped a dangerous Beckham free kick on to the bar soon after the restart, the coach pulled his men back to defend their lead, and Bayern came out on the attack.

Roberto Carlos limped off with another injury, and Casillas once again was the saviour, in particular keeping out a couple of efforts from substitute Pizarro. And with two minutes to go Raúl Bravo failed to clear a cross and Van Bommel latched on to the rebound to fire a shot past the keeper, upsetting the crowd with his gestures which he had clearly learned at the Nou Camp. A difficult result, and Madrid now need at least a draw in Munich in two week's time to be sure of going through.
