Valencia were already sure of top spot in their group before their match at Roma kicked off, and with many of his squad injured, Quique Flores used the occasion to give a run out to some of his lesser used and younger players. The Italians too were missing top names such as Totti, but they still needed a point to reach the next round, and Panucci headed them in to an early lead after Mexes headed back Taddei's free kick.

After that the chances were few and far between, with Joaquín firing a shot just over the bar before the break. Youth international striker Aarón Ñiguez, who was making his first team debut, had to be stretchered off midway through the first half, and his replacement Nacho Insa just failed to turn in a Jorge López cross soon after the restart. Mancini went close for the home side, but Tavano could have equalised after intercepting a bad back pass near the end. Roma had what they wanted though, and they go through to the last sixteen as second in the group behind the Chés.
