Barcelona qualified for the
knock out stage of the competition with a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen, a result
which takes them above the German side up to second in their group. Nothing
short of a victory was needed, and Ronaldinho gave the Blaugrana the lead in
the thirteenth minute, striking a clever free kick low under the defensive
wall, once again emulating Rivaldo. And Gudjohnsen got the second just five
minutes later after Ronaldinho and Giuly combined to set him up, the referee
waving away Bremen's claims for offside.
The Icelandic striker almost
made it three before the break, picking up a pass after a long run by Deco and
dancing past four of five defenders before shooting against the post. The ball
fell to Giuly in front of goal, but with the keeper nowhere to be seen he
somehow put his shot wide of the target.
The visitors came out
strongly after the restart though, with Valdés doing well to keep out
Almeida, and Jensen almost catching the keeper off guard with a long shot which
came back off the bar. Wiese made a good save from Gudjohnsen at the other end
though after a Ronaldinho inspired breakaway, and the keeper came out quickly
to stop Giuly later in the second half. But only a rapid reaction from Thuram
prevented Klasnic from scoring late on, and it was not until the final whistle
went that the fans could finally relax. |
