Valencia confirmed top spot
in their group after a 2-0 win over Olympiakos. The Spaniards were already sure
of a place in the next round before the game began, but the Greek side still
had a remote chance of qualifying, and Cañizares had to be at his best
to keep out a Rivaldo shot early on. Both sides lost their front men to injury
in the first twenty minutes, and Maric came on for the visitors to test
Cañizares once again with a long free kick. But Nikopolidis did well to
save a David Silva header, and with the first half coming to a close Angulo
picked up a return pass from Curro Torres following a throw in, and struck an
angled shot wide of the keeper.
Within a minute of the
restart Valencia were two up,David Villa's replacement Morientes squeezing
between two defenders on the far post to head home David Silva's cross. It was
his fifth goal in the competition this season, taking him level at the top of
the goalscorers' chart with Drogba and Kaká. The locals could have added
to their lead after that, Zewlakow clearing off the line from Joaquín,
Nikopolidis saving again from Silva and Joaquín almost catching the
keeper off his line with a wide free kick which struck the upright. But Quique
Flore's side had done more than enough to win, and they can now visit Roma for
their last match knowing that nothing is at stake, for them at least.
