Real Madrid had to settle for second place in their group after drawing 2-2 against Olympique Lyon. Capello's side were thankful to save a point though after going two down in the first half hour, Carew forcing his way through past Cannavaro and then Ramos and Helguera to shoot wide of Casillas early on and Malouda getting ahead of the defence to turn Juninho's free kick past Casillas for the second on the half hour mark.

Diarra headed one back against his old club before the break though after Van Nistelrooy headed back a corner from Reyes, who had substituted the injured Guti minutes before. And either side could have scored in a lively start to the second half, Ramos and Robinho both failing to find the target, Casillas saving from Carew and Malouda shooting over the top.

Van Nistelrooy finally levelled the scores seven minutes from the end, scoring from close up after Cassano had nodded on a Roberto Carlos cross which Raúl then headed against the foot of the post. And Madrid could have won it two minutes from the end had Coupet not saved Van Nistelrooy's penalty after the striker had been brought down by Cris.
