Valencia are almost sure of going through to the next stage though after a comfortable 2-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk. Joaquín was playing his first Champions League match for his new side after serving out a two match ban, and he brought a good save out of Pletikosa early on. But it was David Villa who was to be the star of the match, picking up a loose ball to round the keeper and open the scoring on the half hour mark.

Raúl Albiol had to be on his toes to stop Aghahowa from equalising, but Villa, Morientes and Joaquín all had chances before Joaquín floated the ball across from the right wing for Villa to head home his second of the night on the stroke of half time. Brandao could have got one back after the restart if he had been able to get on the end of Marica's cross, but the Ukrainian side were left with ten men when Chygrynskiy picked up a second booking a quarter of an hour from the end, and substitute Gavilán could have got a third goal if he had been able to find the target when free in front of goal late on.
