For the second year in a row, Real Madrid lost their opening group game to Olympique Lyon. Fabio Capello's side were met with an onslaught in the first half, Casillas having to save an early Juninho free kick before Fred ran on to Juninho's long pass to lob the keeper in only the eleventh minute.

Casillas was in action again soon afterwards as play continued in Real Madrid's half, and on the half hour mark Tiago made it two, sliding the ball past the keeper after Govou set him up. And before the interval the French team could have scored three or four more, Casillas saving from Reveillère, Malouda firing a shot against the crossbar and Fred heading an easy chance over after a comedy of errors between Cannavaro and Casillas.

The introduction of Reyes at the break at least gave a bit of sparkle to his side, and the ex Sevilla and Arsenal forward brought a first save out of Coupet. Juninho hit the side netting with a free kick, but after that Lyon closed down the game, happy already with the result. Van Nistelrooy did manage to hit the side netting himself ten minutes from the end, but otherwise Coupet was hardly troubled, and Madrid once again went home with nothing. Capello has some serious thinking to do.
