A hat-trick from Fernando
Morientes gave Valencia a 2-4 win in their opening match against Olympiakos.
Curiously Spanish sides have never won in Greece in European competitions, and
the trend appeared to be continuing as the locals dominated the early play
before Konstantinou controlled Stoltidis's pass to open the scoring.
But the ex Real Madrid and
Liverpool striker scored two in five minutes before the break to turn the
scoreline around, the first from close up after David Villa set him up, and the
second on a quick breakaway after Angulo's shot was saved by Nikopolidis.
Villa should have wrapped
things up after the restart, but on three separate occasions he was unable to
beat the keeper when free on goal. Cañizares had to keep out a
Konstantinou header soon afterwards though, and Castillo levelled the scores
after controlling Djordjevic's long ball on his chest before shooting across
the keeper.
Rivaldo could have put the
locals ahead when he shot wide with the goal at his mercy. But with five
minutes to go Raúl Albiol restored the lead for the Spaniards with a
fierce shot following a corner, and Morientes wrapped things up, heading home
David Silva's corner in the last minute to complete his hat-trick and take his
tally in the Champions League to 30 goals. The first three points were on the
board, and Valencia are back! |
