Defending champions
Barcelona had no problems despatching Levski Sofia on a rainy night in the Nou
Camp stadium. Iniesta started things off in the sixth minute after a brilliant
team move, Deco sending Ronaldinho off down the wing for him to cross in to
Eto'o, who flicked the ball into Iniesta's path. Full backs Belletti and Van
Bronckhorst caused some problems, but there was also a timid reaction from the
Bulgarians, Stanislav Angelov testing Valdés with a long shot.
With six minutes to go to
the break though Giuly made it two following Iniesta's quickly taken free kick
which Eto'o played on for the winger to round his man and clip a shot over the
keeper, and it was already over. Puyol joined in the fun, scoring his first
ever Champions League goal four minutes after the restart after Petkov could
only push out Ronaldinho's free kick, and Eto'o made it four soon afterwards
with a solo effort, picking up Deco's pass and finding space between four
markers to shoot low past the keeper.
After that it was shooting
practice, with Eto'o and substitute Gudjohnsen in particular testing Petkov
once again. Thuram closed down angelov as the visitors tried for a consolation
goal, and with the game coming to an end Ronaldinho rounded things off, taking
a pass from Eto'o and leaving his man for dead before curled a shot past the
keeper and in off the far post. With Chelsea beating Werder Bremen in the other
group match it looks like a two horse race. |
