Osasuna will have to make do
with a place in the UEFA cup after losing their tie with Hamburg thanks to the
away goal rule. With a scoreless draw from the first leg the Pamplona based
team were hopeful of a first ever participation in the lucrative league stage,
and when Cuéllar rose to head a David López corner into the net
in the sixth minute they seemed to be on their way.
The German side came back
with Van der Vaart setting up Sanogo to head wide twice and then shooting just
off target himself, and Lauth wasted another chance which the Dutchman laid on
a plate. Soldado shot just wide at the other end though, and keeper Kirschstein
took the ball off the head of Milosevic as he was lining up to score.
Osasuna took a grip of
midfield after the break though, anxious to defend their lead up to the end.
But with a quarter of an hour to go the visitors equalised somewhat
fortunately, Benjamin getting on the end of Van der Vaart's free kick and
appearing to knock the ball across the face of the goal with his arm allowing
De Jong to tap in to an empty net.
Cuco Ziganda immediately
made changes, and Puñal brought a spectacular save out of Kirschstein
before Webó headed a last minute chance over the bar. But the final
whistle went soon afterwards and Osasuna were out, only the second Spanish club
to fail at this stage of the competition after Mallorca lost to Molde some six
years ago. They still have the UEFA cup to look forward to, but that was no
consolation for anybody in the Reyno de Navarra stadium tonight.
