Valencia will be in Thursday
afternoon's league stage draw after overturning a first leg defeat against
Salzburg in front of a 52,000 capacity crowd at the Mestalla stadium. Quique
Flores's side quickly cancelled out the Austrians' one goal lead from the first
leg, Morientes finishing off after keeper Ochs could only push a shot from
David Villa in to his path. And eight minutes before half time the Chés
went ahead after Carboni handled in the area under pressure from Villa, the
striker scoring on the rebound after Ochs pushed his penalty kick on to the
post.
An away goal would still
have given Salzburg the overall victory though, and there were a few nervous
moments as Mattheus and Trapattoni urged their side forward. Piak fired a shot
just wide, and substitute Jezeck caused a few problems for Cañizares and
his defence. But with the game already in injury time David Silva picked up the
ball on the right of the area and threaded a low shot into the far bottom
corner of the net. Valencia were back in the Champions League, and the fans
breathed a sigh of relief. |
