Two late goals gave Sevilla
a big advantage for the second leg as Juande Ramos's side beat Zenit St.
Petersburg 4-1. The Spaniards got off to a good start, Saviola and
Escudé both testing Malafeev before Saviola opened the scoring with a
header from Adriano's cross on the quarter hour mark. But the Russian side
fought back, Kerzakhov having a serious penalty appeal turned down before the
striker got on the end of Arshavin's cross to equalise.
The turning point though
came ten minutes in to the second half when Hagen was sent off by Luxembourg
referee Alain Hamer after giving away a penalty on Kanouté. There was
concern amongst the fans after three penalty misses in a week by their side,
but Martí stepped up to drive home the kick.
After that Zenit sat back to
defend the result, but Saviola increased the lead eight minutes from the end
after a good team move which ended with a pass from Maresca, and soon
afterwards the visitors were left with nine men when Arshavin was also shown a
red card for a hard tackle on Escudé. Antonio Puerta hit the bar as
Sevilla gave it a final push, and with the game already in injury time Adriano
put the icing on the cake with a fourth goal. The result should be good enough
to see them through to the semi-finals, where they will probably meet German
side Schalke '04. |
