Betis have a good chance of reaching the quarter finals of the competition after coming away from Steaua Bucharest with a score-less draw. Serra Ferrer surprised everyone switching Joaquín to the left wing and playing Varela on the right, and it almost paid off early on when Varela shot just wide in only the second minute.

The Romanian side came back though, Luis Fernández having to clear from Nicolita soon afterwards and Dica, Nesu and Nicolita all failing to find the target either side of half time. Edu was closed down by Goian as he advanced on goal in the second half, and Juanito headed a corner just over the bar. But Doblas had to be at his best to prevent Radoi from scoring later on. In the end though both sides settled for a draw, leaving the outcome for the return leg in the Ruíz de Lopera stadium in a week's time.
