Sevilla overcame a freezing
night and a potato field of a pitch to beat Lokomotiv Moscow 0-1 and take a big
advantage in to the second leg. Despite temperatures 15 degrees below zero,
Juande Ramos's side settled quickly, and they could have taken the lead had
Kanouté chosen to pass to Adriano rather than try a shot himself. And
when the striker repeated the act a few minutes later, Martí and Jordi
had to separate the two players to prevent them coming to blows.
The Russian side were not
creating any problems for Notario, although the keeper himself almost set up
his opponents with a mistake which Dragutinovic had to sort out. Luis Fabiano
had failed to find the target with a header a few minutes earlier, and Adriano
hit the post after a good team move.
Then with a quarter of an
hour to go Kanouté waited too long and allowed the defence to clear, but
from the subsequent corner Jordi got on the end of Martí's cross to
score what was to be the only goal, his header bouncing down on to his leg and
in to the net. Notario had to make a first class save after that from Loskov's
free kick to ensure the final result though, which should be good enough to see
them through to a meeting with either Lille or Shakhtar in the next round.
