Sevilla finished top of
their group after drawing 1-1 at Bolton in the last game of the league stage.
With qualification already in the bag, Juande Ramos put out a line up packed
with reserve players. The English side needed a point though to make sure of
reaching the next round, and they dominated the early minutes, Diouf, Jaidi and
Okocha all going close. Luis Fabiano hit the post at the other end before the
break, but midway through the second half substitute N'Gotty gave the locals
the lead following a Fadiga corner.
Ramos brought on Saviola and
Adriano though, and soon afterwards Saviola won the ball for Martí to
set up Adriano for the equaliser. Both sides had chances after that, in
particular the locals through Nakata and substitute Vaz Té, but in the
end they settled for a point which helped the two coaches achieve their
respective objectives. The third round draw paired Sevilla with Lokomotiv
Moscow, who finished third in Espanyol's group. |
