Sevilla ensured their place
in the third round with a 3-1 win over Vitoria Guimaraes on Thursday evening.
The Portuguese side, managed by ex Mallorca coach Jaime Pacheco, had to win to
stay in the competition, but the Andalusians had the game wrapped up with three
goals before the break. Saviola opening the scoring early on after Adriano set
him up, and the Argentine striker helped himself to a second a few minutes
later with an individualist effort, beating two men before shooting inside the
post.
Five minutes before half
time it was all over when Adriano beat Pavia for a third time, although
Benachour gave the 3,000 travelling Portuguese fans some hope with a powerful
shot just before the half time whistle. But Juande Ramos shut up shop in the
second half, and the visitors were limited to some hard tackles on their
opponents as their frustration grew. Youngster Diego Capel was given a run out
near the end and had a penalty appeal turned down, but by then it didn't matter
much. Sevilla were through to join city rivals Betis in the knock-out stage,
and they will travel to Bolton in two weeks' time needing just a draw to top
their group. |
