Espanyol scraped a point in
a 1-1 draw with Palermo in Barcelona, a last minute goal from Moisés
Hurtado saving the day and keeping the Catalans on line for a place in the next
round. It was hard work though, and Lotina's side hardly had a sight at goal in
a first half in which the only chances fell to the visitors. Mariano
González put Gorka Iraizoz to the test five minutes before the break,
and on the stroke of half time González got on the end of Codrea's
chipped cross to volley past the keeper and open the scoring.
There was more action in the
second half though, Jonathan Soriano heading two good chances just wide of the
mark within minutes of the restart, and De la Peña seeing his snapshot
saved by Guardalben. Lotina finally called on Juanfran and Tamudo, his team
captain having been rested at the start as he was carrying a knock, and Armando
Sá came close to equalising when he broke through but couldn't finish
off. Grosso went close at the other end following a corner, but Espanyol's
third substitute brought the best save of the night out of the visiting keeper
a few minutes later.
It seemed though that Del
Neri's team were going to take the three points until De la Peña took a
free kick from outside of the area, and Moisés got above the defence to
steer a header down into the corner of the net. The Catalans had kept up their
unbeaten record against Italian sides, and with four points from their first
two games they are well positioned for a place in the next round.
