After resting on the first
day of the league stage of the competition, Sevilla opened their account with a
convincing 3-0 win over Besiktas. The result didn't seem so clear though in the
first 45 minutes, and Ailton came close to putting Tigana's side ahead with
less than a quarter of an hour on the clock. The locals only real effort was a
shot from Saviola just wide of the post early on, and Notario and his defence
were under pressure from the Turks for much of the time.
Sevilla took control though
after the restart, Luis Fabiano unlucky to have a penalty appeal turned down by
the Belgian referee. With almost an hour on the clock Juande Ramos replaced the
Brazilian striker with Kanouté, and within a few minutes the new man
made his mark, first of all setting up Saviola for him to score his first
official goal for the club, and then steering a header past visiting keeper
Córdoba just a minute later.
After that it was plain
sailing, and Notario was only troubled by an effort from Pancu. And with the
game coming to an end Kanouté rounded off a good night running on to a
long pass out of midfield to push the ball around Córdoba and score his
side's third. The result takes the Andalusians up to second in the group behind
Bolton, and with the first three to qualify they are already well on their way.
