Sevilla had a difficult trip
to Mainz '05 after a scoreless draw at home in the first leg, but two goals in
the first half from Kanouté gave them a 0-2 win. With his side currently
suffering a goal drought, Juande Ramos decided to line up with his two new
signings Saviola and Kanouté together. And with only nine minutes on the
clock they proved him right, Saviola running through to fire in a shot which
Wache could only palm out, and Kanouté picking up the rebound to steer a
shot into the empty net.
That was a vital away goal,
and now the German side needed two to turn the scoreline around. But although
Zidan and Thurk were active in attack they were unable to break down a well
disciplined defence, and with a few minutes to go to half time Kanouté
added a second goal after pulling down a long cross from Daniel Alves.
The French striker came
close to completing his hat-trick when he headed against the bar after the
restart, and Saviola brought another good save out of Wache. But the Spanish
side had done enough to go through to the league stage, something they were
counting on in this, their centenary year. |
