UEFA Cup, fourth round second leg
Betis were
unceremoniously dumped out of the cup after losing 0-3 to Steaua
Bucharest. After Sevilla's victory the night before, Serra Ferrer's side
were expected to build on their scoreless draw from the first leg and join
their city neighbours in the last eight. But after a first half without goals,
they fell behind when Nicolita burst through from midfield and shot wide of
Contreras. Things got worse when Joaquín was sent off for lashing out at
Dica, and although Dani hit the bar a few minutes later, Iacob put the
Romanians further ahead ten minutes from the end when he steered a header past
the keeper. Nicolita made it three in the closing minutes to wrap things up,
and the fans turned on the directors' box in protest after the final whistle.

Sevilla are through
to the quarter finals of a European competition for the first time in their
history after beating Lille 2-0 in the Sánchez Pizjuán
stadium. The French side were up against it when Bodmer was sent off for a foul
on Javi Navarro midway through the first half, and Kanouté cancelled out
their one goal first leg advantage when he connected with a pass from Alves to
score soon afterwards. Luis Fabiano got the winner on the stroke of half time,
and although numbers were evened up when Jesús Navas was sent off for
retaliating after the restart, Juande Ramos's side held on for victory.
