Champions League, second round, second leg
Spain will have two teams in
the last eight of the competition after Barcelona and Villarreal
both won through their respective ties against Chelsea and
Rangers on Tuesday night. Real Madrid will not be joining them
though after they were knocked out by Arsenal the following day.

Arsenal 0 - Real Madrid 0
Real Madrid are out
of the competition after failing to score in 180 minutes against
Arsenal. López Caro's side needed at least one goal after their
0-1 defeat in the first leg, and Ronaldo went close a couple of times early on.
But the English team could have scored themselves later in the first half,
especially when Reyes fired a shot against the crossbar after Henry set him up
close to half time. Raúl could have taken the game to extra time when he
hit the post after the restart and then saw his follow up tipped past the post
by Lehmann. But despite three attacking substitutions they were unable to find
the route to goal after that, and it looks like being a third year in a row
without a trophy for the nine time European champions. (08.03.06)
Barcelona 1 - Chelsea 1
Barcelona qualified
with relative ease for the quarter finals, their 1-2 win from the first leg
never really being challenged by their opponents Chelsea. The English
side needed to score two goals to have a chance of going through, but they were
allowed very few clear cut chances by a solid defence. Then with twelve minutes
to go Ronaldinho took the ball from Eto'o in midfield and shrugged off
challenges by Carvalho and Terry to fire a shot wide of Cech from the edge of
the area. With Mourinho's side throwing everything forward, Eto'o almost
wrapped things up when he hit the post a few minutes from the end. But a more
than dubious penalty in the last minute of injury time allowed Lampard to level
the scores on the night before the final whistle went seconds later. (07.03.06)
Villarreal 1 - Glasgow Rangers 1
Villarreal will join
Barcelona in the draw for the next round after knocking out Rangers on
the away goal rule. A 2-2 draw from the first leg meant that the Scottish side
had to win or get a high scoring draw at the Madrigal stadium, and they got off
to the best possible start when Viera failed to hold on to the ball in the area
and Lovenkrans took advantage to put the visitors ahead. Waterreus saved well
from Forlán later in the first half, but just four minutes after the
restart Riquelme and Forlán combined to set up Arruabarrena to make it
all square. The rest of the second half was nail biting stuff for both sets of
fans, but there was no further score and Pellegrini's side are in to the last
eight. (07.03.06) |
