European cup draws
Champions League
The draw was made for the
first knock out round today, with results as set out below. Spain's three
remaining sides have all been drawn against British opposition, without doubt
the pick of the round being Barcelona against Chelsea, who knocked the Catalans
out of the competition at the same stage last season. Real Madrid have been
paired with Arsenal, and newcomers Villarreal have what on paper is the easiest
of the three, with a tie against Glasgow Rangers. Matches to be played over two
legs on 21/22 February and 7/8 March 2006. (16.12.05)
UEFA Cup
Three Spanish sides entered
the draw for the third round of the competition, Sevilla and Espanyol who made
it through from the previous group stage and Sevilla's city neighbours Betis,
who were knocked out of the Champions' League after finishing third in their
mini-league. The fixtures involving Spanish teams are set out below, with all
but Betis away in their first leg games. The draw was also made for the fourth
round, with the following pairings:
Heerenveen or Steaua
Bucharest v Betis or Alkmaar; Slavia Prague or Palermo v Schalke or
Espanyol; Lille or Shaktar v Lokomotiv or Sevilla. (16.12.05)
