Champions League, third qualifying round, second leg
Villarreal 2 - Everton 1
Villarreal will join
Betis, Real Madrid and Barcelona in tomorrow's draw after beating
Everton 4-2 on aggregate. The Spaniards increased their first leg lead
when Sorín's shot was deflected in off Weir midway through the first
half, and only a string of saves by Martyn saved the visitors from falling
further behind by the break. But Arteta curled a free kick past Barbosa after
the restart, and Fergusson thought he had taken the tie into extra time when he
headed past the keeper later on only for referee Collina to rule out his strike
for a possible foul. After that Pellegrini's side defended furiously until two
minutes in to injury time, when Sorín got away down the left wing on a
rapid breakaway and set up Diego Forlán for him put the result beyond
Everton's reach. (24.08.05)
Monaco 2 - Betis 2
Two goals from Oliveira
against Monaco took Betis through to a first ever appearance in
the first round of the Champions League. With a one goal lead from the first
leg, the Andalusians looked to be well on their way when the Brazilian striker
headed home Xisco's cross on the quarter hour mark. But ex Barcelona midfielder
Gerard levelled the scores with a shot into the top corner of the net, and
although Doblas saved a penalty from Meriem later in the first half, substitute
Maoulida headed the French league side into the lead after the restart.
Oliveira popped up again though fifteen minutes from the end to fight his way
past three defenders and shoot wide of Warmuz to put the result beyond the
reach of the hosts. (23.08.05) |
