The regionalised draw for
the preliminary round of the Spanish cup took place on 18th July, with ties to
be played over two legs on or around 14th and 21st August. Some 36 teams enter
the competition at this stage, made up of 19 of the top teams from second
division B and the 17 third division group winners (second placed teams where
group champions were B sides of teams in higher divisions). The winners go on
to participate in the first round together with first and second division A
sides. (19.07.05)

The first leg of the
qualifying round of the Spanish Cup took place over the last few days, with the
best second division B and third division sides fighting it out for a place
with the top teams in the first round. Michel's Rayo Vallecano once again had a
disappointing result, losing 1-0 to third division side Rápido Bouzas,
but newly promoted Oviedo appear to be through after winning 0-2 at Escobedo.
The two Las Palmas clubs cancelled each other out in a scoreless draw, and
Alicante produced the best win of the weekend, beating Constància 0-5 on
the island of Mallorca. (15.08.05)

There will be some difficult
opponents for the big clubs in the first round of the cup, especially as the
matches are due to take place on 31st August when many of their top players
will be on international duty. Rayo Vallecano recovered from their qualifying
round first leg defeat at Rápido Bouzas to win through 2-1 on aggregate
thanks to goals from ex first division players Armentano and Geni, and Las
Palmas beat their neighbours Universidad 1-0 with a strike from Aythami. Oviedo
will also be in Thursday's draw, as will Mérida, Alicante and
Recreación, who will be taking over the mantle (and the name) of
Logroñés. Marbella and Leganés are both out though after
losing to lower division opposition. (21.08.05) |
