Valencia are out of the
Intertoto and the UEFA Cup after failing to overcome a 1-0 deficit from their
first leg against Hamburg. Quique Flores drafted in Pablo Aimar after the
scoreless draw in the first leg, and the Argentine midfielder set up Rufete for
him to fire in an early shot which Wächter stuck out a foot to block. And
a few minutes later Rufete whipped in a cross which Kluivert headed against the
crossbar.
But gradually the Spaniards
ran out of steam, and Van der Vaart started to cause problems for
Cañizares. Flores decided to make changes for the second half, David
Villa and then Angulo coming on, and Baraja and Vicente both tried their luck.
But even with Di Vaio on the park as well there was no way through, and Lauth
came close to wrapping things up on the counter attack later on.
Nerves frayed in the closing
minutes, and players faced off against each other as the Germans ran down the
clock. But soon afterwards the final whistle went, and it was all over. All in
all a disappointing night all round for Valencia, and their hopes of carrying
on in Europe were well and truly dashed. |
