Valencia virtually ensured a
place in one of the finals against Hamburg or Sigma Olomouc after beating
Holland's Roda 4-0 in the first leg of their semi-final, thanks in large part
to a hat-trick by Rufete in a fifteen minute period around half time.
There were few opportunities
early on, with Vicente shooting wide in the third minute and Cissé
replying for the Dutch side with a shot over the bar later in the half. But the
hosts were well on top, and they took the lead when Rufete followed up after
Kujovic could only palm away Edu's header from a Di Vaio cross. Just five
minutes later the winger made it two after picking up a return pass from
Vicente, and Di Vaio could have got a third had his chip not just cleared the
crossbar.
Rufete completed his
hat-trick though just five minutes after the restart after Kluivert set him up,
and Di Vaio and David Villa were both denied by Kujovic as the Spaniards looked
to increase their lead. And with seven minutes to go they did get the fouth
goal they wanted, Moretti coming on to head Fabio Aurelio's cross in on the far
post and make next week's second leg a mere formality. |
