Athletic Bilbao are already out of the Intertoto Cup after losing on penalties to Romania's Cluj. Ex Eibar coach Mendilibar was making his home debut, and once again he was forced to put out a side packed with youngsters, with all eleven from the province of Vizcaya and only five players from the first team squad. Neither side made much inroad until ten minutes before the break, when Javi González (who had missed a penalty in the first leg) got on the end of Jonan's cross to head past Turcas. Dañobieta, De Paula and Jonan all wasted chances either side of half time, and visiting defender Jula almost scored in his own net when he turned a cross against his own crossbar.

But the youngsters ran out of steam, and Coroian and Tilinca both could have scored before the full time whistle blew and the game went in to extra time. Tilinca missed a couple more chances after that and the referee let Eder off a possible penalty on Coroian, and Turcas saved well from Julen Guerrero in the dying minutes of the extra thirty minutes. But eventually it was down to penalties, and after Ustaritz put the first kick over the bar, the Romanians converted all five to go through. It was a repeat of the Copa del Rey semi-final with Betis, and once again San Mamés proved to be an unlucky ground in the shoot out. Athletic's European challenge was over almost before it had begun.
