Athletic Bilbao started
their new era under José Luis Mendilibar with a defeat in the first leg
of the Intertoto Cup, losing 1-0 in Transylvania at the hands of Romania's
Cluj. With the club getting a late invitation to the competition, the new team
coach had to make do with a side packed with youngsters, and they went behind
ten minutes before the break when Tilinca headed in Panin's cross. Half time
substitute Javi González could have got the vital away goal after the
restart when the Basques were awarded a penalty for a foul by Milosevic on De
Paula, but keeper Turcas saved his spot kick. And the Spaniards struggled late
on as they ran out of steam and were lucky not lose by a bigger margin in the
end. |
